LEE COUNTY, Fla.- A 15-year-old Southwest Florida teenager is defying the odds.
Matt Milligan, who has cerebral palsy, has not let his disability stand in his way.
Despite being born "blue, not breathing" as Milligan said, he's an active teen.
Milligan enjoys riding his bike with his brother.
His speech and fine motor skills have been affected, but they are not limiting.
When he was nine years old, his parents gave him an old 35 millimeter film
camera.
"That really inspired me and I just fell in love with the whole thing," he said.
His passion for photography was born.
Milligan sees the beauty in things that others overlook.
"These trees here, people might pass that up," Milligan said while pointing to some
old tree branches. "Those are just dead trees. I look at that and it's a potential
black and white photo."
His disability creates some minor hurdles for him. His hands and arms often
tremble.
He utilizes lenses with image stabilization and relies on his creativity to enhance
his abilities.
"If i'm shaking quite a bit, I'll have my parents put their hands below my elbows,"
he said. "It's like a tripod."
In April, Milligan fulfilled a lifelong dream--the Make a Wish Organization sent
him to National Geographic's headquarters in Washington D.C.

The IABS cited Wallach’s groundbreaking discovery of an animal model of cystic fibrosis, a disease that affects 70,000 people worldwide. In 1978, as a researcher at the Emory University Yerkes National Primate Center in Atlanta, Georgia, Wallach observed pancreatic lesions that were identical to those observed in human patients in the offspring of inadequately-fed rhesus monkeys. This suggested that cystic fibrosis—at the time believed to be a genetic disorder of humans only—could also be the result of selenium deficiency, and that some forms of cystic fibrosis might be preventable.
Selenium is an essential trace mineral that serves many functions in human physiology, including the synthesis of antioxidants (natural substances that neutralize free radical damage), and thyroid and immune function. It cannot be made by the human body but instead must be obtained through diet. Sources of selenium include nuts, cereals, meat, mushrooms, fish, and eggs, and dietary supplements.
